Acceleration of ultra-high energy cosmic ray particles in relativistic jets in extragalactic radio sources

چکیده
A mechanism of ultra-high energy cosmic ray acceleration in extragalactic radio sources, at the interface between the relativistic jet and the surrounding medium, is discussed as a supplement to the shock acceleration in ‘hot spots’. Due to crossing the tangential discontinuity of the velocity the particle can gain an amount of energy comparable to the energy gain at the shock crossing. However, the spectrum of particles accelerated at the jet side boundary is expected to be much flatter than the one formed at the shock. Due to this fact, particles accelerated at the boundary can dominate the overall spectrum at highest energies. In conditions characteristic to extragalactic jets’ terminal shocks, the mechanism naturally provides the particles with E ∼ 1020 eV and complies with the efficiency requirements. The spectrum formation near the cut-off energy due to action of both the shock acceleration and the tangential discontinuity acceleration is modelled with the Monte Carlo particle simulations. It confirms that the upper energy limit can surpass the shock acceleration estimate.

The discoveries of the GZK cutoff with the HiRes and Auger Observatories and the discovery by Auger of clustering of > ∼ 60 EeV ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) towards nearby ( < ∼ 75 Mpc) AGNs along the supergalactic plane establishes the astrophysical origin of the UHECRs. The likely sources of the UHECRs are gamma-ray bursts and radio-loud AGNs because: (1) they are extragalactic; (2)...

X–ray emission from large scale extragalactic jets is likely to be due to inverse Compton scattering of relativistic particles off seed photons of both the cosmic microwave background field and the blazar nucleus. The first process dominates the observed high energy emission of large scale jets if the plasma is moving at highly relativistic speeds and if the jet is aligned with the line of sigh...

The flux of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at E > 1018.5 eV is believed to arise in plasma shock environments in extragalactic sources. In this paper, we present a systematic study of particle acceleration by relativistic shocks, in particular concerning the dependence on bulk Lorentz factor and the angle between the magnetic field and the shock flow. For the first time, simulation resu...

متن کاملCosmic ray acceleration in subluminal and superluminal relativistic shock environments
The flux of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) at E > 1018.5 eV is believed to arise in plasma shock environments in extragalactic sources. Galactic sources are not able to generate these high energies and the distribution of charged particles is too isotropic to originate from the galaxy. The best candidates for particle acceleration up to 1021 eV are believed to be the Active Galactic Nuc...
